KUALA SELANGOR, Feb 16 (Bernama) --
Two recent surveys indicate that the majority of voters in the Klang Valley rely on the candidate than the party in picking their elected representative, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said here.
He said the surveys, conducted by the Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN), showed that between 50 and 70 per cent of the respondents looked at the personality of the candidate rather than the party when making their choice in an election.
The surveys revealed that the mindset of voters had changed, signalling that the Selangor BN must ensure that its candidates in the Klang Valley must be well qualified and acceptable to the voters, he told reporters after launching the Sekinchan Smart Community programme at the Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Yoke Kuan in Sekinchan near here last night.
As such, the criteria for choosing election candidates in Selangor included good educational background and good interpersonal skills, he said, adding that good looks would be an added advantage.
Khir said this new trend was also apparent among the Indian voters in the Batu Caves state constituency, adding that Selangor BN had to propose more than one potential candidate from the MIC to gauge their popularity and acceptance.
He also called on voters in Sekinchan to return the BN to the state seat held by the DAP
